The Energy Efficient Regions project in Armenia reduces public building energy consumption by 40%
Energy savings at public buildings participating in the Energy Efficient Regions project totalled 40%, as announced by Karen Asatryan, Director of Armenia’s Renewable Resources and Energy Efficiency Fund (R2E2), at an expert meeting.
This result was achieved within two years.
R2E2 has been implementing this project for Armenia’s Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure since 2022, with a US $1.7 million grant provided by the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD).
The project conducted primary energy audits of over 80 public buildings, ultimately selecting 11 facilities for energy efficiency improvements.
For instance, the CANDLE Synchrotron Research Institute received 150 kW solar panels and thermal insulation. Similarly, the Yerevan Sports School of Figure Skating and Hockey was equipped with 100 kW solar panels. A health center in Alaverdi also underwent thermal insulation and received energy-saving equipment.
Participants in the expert meeting agreed that this successful experience should be scaled up.
The meeting, held in Yerevan on November 19 and 20, brought together representatives and management from Armenia’s Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, the Renewable Resources and Energy Efficiency Fund, the National Polytechnic University of Armenia, UNDP, and energy-saving technology experts from Belarus, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Tajikistan.
Armenia is one of the founding states of the EFSD. The EFSD’s portfolio of completed and ongoing projects in the country exceeds US $830 million. The Fund supports the modernization of irrigation systems, the fourth phase of the North–South road corridor, the construction of an infectious disease center in Vanadzor, upgrades to two regional branches of the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and other projects in agriculture, transport, and healthcare.
Armenia’s Renewable Resources and Energy Efficiency Fund (R2E2) was established by Governmental Resolution 799-N on April 28, 2005.
Its primary objectives include promoting renewable energy and energy savings, enhancing energy security, preparing and implementing credit and grant programs on behalf of the state, and mitigating technological processes’ impact on human health and the environment.
The Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD) is a regional financing arrangement totaling over US $9 billion, established in 2009 by the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Russian Federation, and the Republic of Tajikistan. The EFSD aims to promote economic and financial stability in its member states and support their sustainable development.
