29 January 2021

Yerevan, 29 January 2021. Armenia has launched free breast screening tests under the programme to improve prevention and control of non-communicable diseases in primary health care funded by a grant from the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD) managed by the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB).

The programme finances breast screening examinations in women aged 50 to 69 in the country’s Lori, Tavush, and Syunik regions. Mobile mammography equipment will be successively deployed in the most densely populated areas. The resulting mammograms will be read by specialists at the Fanarjyan National Centre for Oncology.

For the first six months, the mobile mammography unit will be deployed at the Vanadzor Medical Centre and Vanadzor outpatient clinics.

Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women. More than 1,000 new cases are diagnosed yearly in Armenia, with a 20% increase in recent years.
