EFSD participates in launch ceremony of new hydropower unit at Nurek hydropower plant in Tajikistan
The Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD, the Fund) has taken part in the official launch ceremony of a new hydropower unit at the Nurek Hydropower Plant, attended by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon. The event brought together officials from government bodies, international financial institutions, contractors, and consultants.
As part of the project, the third of nine hydropower units has been fully replaced with new equipment meeting modern technological standards. As a result, the unit’s installed capacity has increased by 40 MW, reaching 375 MW.
Modernization works at the Nurek Hydropower Plant began in 2019. To date, three hydropower units have been fully upgraded, delivering a cumulative increase in installed capacity of 120 MW. Modernization of the fourth unit and the substation’s autotransformers is currently underway.
All nine hydropower units are expected to be rehabilitated by 2032. Upon completion, the plant’s total installed capacity will reach 3,375 MW, with annual electricity generation projected to increase to 12.6 billion kWh.
The rehabilitation of the Nurek Hydropower Plant is financed by EFSD, the World Bank, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. EFSD’s contribution to the project amounts to USD 40 million.
